Weekend Stop: Miami

Each year, I create a list of major cities I want to travel to, and Miami has been on it for quite some time now. For the past couple of years whenever we get into planning this trip I find 99 reasons for why I can’t go 2-3 weeks before the trip: my body is not bikini ready, I have work, I don’t have anything to wear, etc.

This year (once again) I wrote down “travel to Miami as a goal. I purchased travel goal cards, cut out Miami related photos, and said I’m going to Miami this year! Two weeks ago, my significant other called me and asked if I had checked my email. My response, “No, but I’m assuming you sent something…I’m checking now”...I check my email and it’s a plane ticket to Miami in there! Immediately, I get excited but I’m at the office, so I tried to keep it together. I go back to my desk, sit down, and immediately the excuses ring in...”I’m not bikini ready, what do I wear, I have to work plus a speaking engagement that weekend”…etc…etc…etc

Prior to arriving in Miami, I had a list of things I wanted to see. I’m a blogger/social media influencer, so another goal was that I actually wanted to enjoy my experiences and not just do things to get good photos and put on for the ‘gram.

First stop…the beach- the very first thing I do is take pictures. I have my cute pics then stop and think, “now what?” Well ideally you go to a beach to swim, right? I started walking towards the water and there was seaweed washing up onto the shore...disclaimer I am not much of an outdoors girl, so I don’t want to walk through the seaweed. I sit back down on my beach towel and I start making up reasons to leave the beach – “it’s too hot, I can’t walk in the water because I don’t want the seaweed to touch me, I already have my pictures”...(blah blah blah)

Finally, I look over at my significant other and I’m like let’s go swimming...it took me all of two minutes to get through this seaweed and into this amazing clear blue water. I’m swimming and just so caught up in the moment that I look up and I’m so far from shore I’m starting to see animals in the water.

It was in this moment that I realized the difference between me wanting to go to Miami and me going to Miami....the difference between me wanting to swim at that beach and actually swimming at that beach....the difference in me wanting to do anything I’ve done and me actually accomplishing them...was that my mindset had to shift!

Shift your mindset to achieve your goals:

  1. Shift through writing: use your journal to capture clues to who you are, what your passions are, and as a reference when for when you get off track.

  2. Shift through seeing: Place positive images, quotes, bright colors, things that provide you with positive reinforcement. Also - get with a mentor or a coach who is in a position that you aspire to be in and is willing to teach you in a transparent manner.

  3. Shift through speaking: Thoughts create words and words create reality. When you experience negative thoughts, feelings, or excuses speak a line that combats the negativity. Speak life into your situation.
